A Word from the Pastor…

Advent is here…

Advent is an important time in the life of the church, a time to meditate in God’s love, a time to wait for that love to be manifest in our lives, a time to share that love with friends and family.

Advent comes from the Latin word ‘adventus’ meaning ‘Coming’ and marks the beginning of the Christian calendar, starting four Sundays before Christmas. The season of Advent has been set aside as a time of preparation in which we prepare for Christ’s second coming, as we remember and celebrate his first coming at Christmas.

Advent is a time of waiting, a time to open our hearts to God’s presence, a time to pay attention to God’s call. God’s love breaks in over and over again!

Advent is a time for preparing a way for the Lord! A time to make a level highway in the wilderness so all the people will have access to our God. It is a time to listen to the voice calling us to make his path straight so all humanity will see him and be blessed by his love.

Advent is a time to celebrate the coming of the Lord! The Anointed One comes from heaven to bring God’s reign of justice and peace for all.

Advent is a time to magnify the Lord, to proclaim the greatness of God, and to rejoice in the presence of our Savior who is worthy to be praised.

Advent is the time to celebrate God’s love that came from heaven to us! Advent brings an expectation to our lives: the expectation that God will reveal himself to us during this time, the expectation that His love will allow us to bless others, the expectation that His peace will be present in every family reunion and meal together.

Advent is a good time to allow God’s love to use us with His power to bless the world. As you make plans for this time, remember to share your faith, show your love and bring others to worship with us at Benn’s UMC. May this advent be a blessed time for each of you as we worship and grow in love together.

As we move toward growth in spirituality, in numbers, and in faithfulness, we are aware that COVID19 is still a serious threat in our community and the best practice is for everyone, both vaccinated and unvaccinated, to wear a mask at worship and other events. We encourage you to bring your favorite mask or we will be happy to provide one for you as we welcome you to worship.
